German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits Vilnius. President of Lithuania: we need to strengthen defense capabilities in the Baltic states

The leaders of Germany and the Baltic states agreed that defense in the Baltic region should be strengthened, informed Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in Vilnius after a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The chancellor, on the other hand, stated that German involvement should be developed “towards a strong combat brigade”. The head of the German government also announced that Spain has not yet applied for the export of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

– We agreed that we must strengthen the defense capabilities in the Baltic States by increasing the number of deployed troops and by expanding air and sea defense – he told journalists Gitanas Nausedaquoted by Reuters.

Olaf Scholz he promissed Lithuania additional military support to deter and defend against a possible attack Russia. “We are determined to increase our contribution,” he said after talks with the president Lithuania and the heads of government of all three Baltic states. The chancellor noted that German involvement should be developed “towards a strong combat brigade”.

Currently, the German-led NATO battalion of 1,600 soldiers is stationed in Lithuania, more than 1,000 of whom have been sent by the Bundeswehr. The brigade usually consists of about 3,000-5,000 soldiers.

Chancellor Scholz also informed during his visit to Lithuania that Spain has not yet applied for the export of German Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukraine. He stressed that if such a request appeared, it would be considered.

According to the daily “El Pais”, Spain wants to deliver Ukraine Leopard 2 A4 tanks of German production.

Usually, the German government should agree to such arms exports, because the purchase contracts contain the so-called end user clauses in the event of onward transfer.
