A truck driver from Poland who was detained in Germany after causing a series of collisions in North Rhine-Westphalia will remain in a psychiatric facility, local police informed. In the accidents involving the 30-year-old Pole, 19 people were injured, eight of them seriously, and one is in a critical condition.

On Saturday afternoon, a 30-year-old driver from Poland caused a series of accidents involving a total of 50 vehicles on the A1 and A46 motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia. At around 4.30 p.m., the police received the first report of unusual behavior of a truck driver on the section of the motorway between Neuss and Holzheim. It was also noticed that diesel fuel was leaking from the vehicle. Before the truck reached the Wuppertal-Nord motorway junction, it managed to hit several vehicles, German police said. Instead of stopping, the driver exited onto the A1 motorway towards Bremen.

According to witnesses, the truck was driving at an excessive speed. The driver ignored all stop orders from the police, who asked car drivers to leave the A1. The truck left the highway and entered a construction site in front of an oncoming vehicle, hit it and stopped.

On the website of the North Rhine-Westphalia Police (LKA), the police have provided an address to which witnesses can send, among others: photos and videos documenting the event.

19 people injured. “We can talk about happiness”

The police reported on Sunday evening that eight people were seriously injured, one of whom was in a critical condition. Eleven people were slightly injured.

– I think we can talk about happiness that there were no fatalities, North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul told the regional newspaper Rheinische Post.

After the completion of cleaning works on the A1 and A46 motorways, where a series of accidents occurred, they are now passable again.

The driver was placed in a psychiatric facility

Initially, the police reported that at the scene of the incident there were preliminary indications that the truck driver had consumed alcohol or drugs. Appropriate tests were therefore carried out. Correct blood test results are expected in a few days at the earliest.

According to the Duesseldorf police, however, there are indications that the 30-year-old Pole may be mentally ill and therefore not suitable for being placed in custody.

The man is staying temporarily in a psychiatric facility under police supervision and will be placed in another similar facility.
