Germany. AfD politician attacked with an ashtray. The police initiated an investigation

According to the media, the injured person is a member of the national parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Martin Schmidt.

The events took place on the night from Thursday to Friday. One of the guests started insulting the politician, who was sitting with three other people. There was an argument, which ended in hitting Schmidt on the head with a glass ashtray.

The injured person was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

The suspect pleaded guilty

The 52-year-old suspected of the attack pleaded guilty. According to German media reports, he allegedly revealed that in a conversation with police officers his action was the result of reluctance due to different views. He described himself as a person associated with the leftist environment.

The police initiated investigation in connection with insult and bodily harm.

Local AfD leader Nikolaus Kramer was quoted by Deutsche Welle as saying that “violence against politicians, regardless of party, is an attack on freedom of speech and democratic discourse.”

Recently in Germany there were a series of attacks on politicians. At the beginning of May, SPD MP Matthias Ecke was severely beaten in Dresden. Berlin's SPD economic senator Franziska Giffey was slightly injured in an attack last week. Also a few days ago, AfD reported an attack on an election campaign stand in Stuttgart. Its perpetrators were members of Antifa.
