Severe thunderstorms swept across southeastern Germany and southern Czechia over the weekend. Twelve people were injured when a beer tent collapsed in Bavaria. Hail in the same state in one city damaged most of the buildings.

During Saturday storm in the German town of Kissing near Augsburg, a beer tent collapsed due to a gust of strong wind. Six people suffered minor injuries and six others were slightly injured.

In the same city, the roof of a nursing home was damaged and about 100 residents were evacuated. The wind snapped trees and the rain flooded the roads.

The town of Bad Bayersoien in Upper Bavaria was hit hard. Hail, up to eight centimeters in diameter, damaged 80 percent of the buildings, local media reported. Nobody was injured. The authorities of this town, inhabited by about 1,300 inhabitants, declared a state of natural disaster.

In Salzweg, a house caught fire after it was struck by lightning. No one was injured in this incident.

Storms and downpours in the south of Germany

Violent storms have been rolling over southern Germany for several days. As a result of the storms that passed through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on the night from Thursday to Friday, 18 people were injured.

The area around Lake Constance has been particularly affected by the downpours in recent days. For three days in that area, the total rainfall amounted to more than 100 liters per square meter, the national meteorological agency DWD reported on social media. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue into Tuesday.

Thousands of customers without electricity in the Czech Republic

On Saturday evening and in the night from Saturday to Sunday, strong storms hit the Czech Republic. The southern part of the country was particularly hard hit.

Over 20,000 households were left without electricity. A strong wind was blowing, breaking trees. Fallen trees blocked rail traffic in some places. Firefighters pumped water from flooded roads and buildings. In České Budějovice, where about 300 interventions were carried out, one of the largest shopping centers in the city suffered.

In the south of the country, the strongest wind gusts recorded reached 98 kilometers per hour.

Heavy rainfall moves across the western half of the Czech Republic on Monday, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute reports.
