A meeting between the newly appointed German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin took place in Berlin. The American assured that Germany remains one of the most important allies of the United States. Pistorius emphasized that Germany stands “shoulder to shoulder” with its allies. Earlier, the minister said that “the Bundeswehr has a key role to play in the Zeitenwende”, i.e. changing Germany’s policy.

Earlier, during the swearing-in ceremony for the head of the defense ministry, Pistorius said that he wanted to quickly prepare the Bundeswehr for the new threat situation that results from the Russian attack on Ukraine. – It is also important to continue supporting Ukraine, also thanks to the resources of the Bundeswehr – he stressed.

As Pistorius assured after receiving the nomination from President Steinmeier, in the upcoming activities of the ministry it will be important to continue supporting Ukraine, also with supplies of equipment from the resources of the Bundeswehr. – These are not ordinary times, war is raging in Europe. Russia is waging a brutal war to annihilate a sovereign country, Ukraine, Pistorius said.

– Germany is not a party to the war. Nevertheless, this war concerns us – added Pistorius, noting that the concept of security has now taken on a different meaning than a year ago. – That’s why now it’s about making the Bundeswehr strong now, quickly. It’s about deterrence, effectiveness and operational capability,” he said after arriving at the Bendlerblock, the seat of the Ministry of Defense in Berlin.

He admitted that most of the tasks related to the Zeitenwende – a turning point announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, under which a special fund of EUR 100 billion was created for the equipment of the army – has yet to be completed. He added that the German armed forces have often been neglected in recent decades.

As he emphasized, the soldiers now need support, and the minister needs “the support of everyone in the Bundeswehr, the Ministry of Defense and related institutions to fulfill his tasks.” – The Bundeswehr has a key role to play in the Zeitenwende. This will be my task and I will do everything in my power to ensure that the Bundeswehr can fulfill this mission – in the interest of Germany, in the interest of FOR THIS and in the interest of the nation, Pistorius assured.
