Central countries Europe are watching the situation in with concern Ukraine. Just before Christmas Federal Minister of Defense German Boris Pistorius he assessed that Germany needs to spend more money to fill the gaps it has in its defense.
– The message I want to convey very clearly: if Putin attacks, we must be able to wage war – he told the newspapers of the Funke media group. – It would be defensive warbut it would be war. If we were not able to conduct it, we would lose in the event of aggression – said the minister in an interview.
Germany. Boris Pistorius on the condition of the armed forces: On the right track
Pistorius, asked if Germany's armed forces were in good shape, replied: “We are on the right track.” – Almost completely used 100 billion euros from a special fund. This year alone, we launched 97 large projects worth EUR 58 billion. (…) Many people would not believe that we could achieve this so fast – he assessed.
He also pointed out that “the truth is also that we gave Ukraine a lot of material“.
– The industry needs time to increase production capacity and produce weapons and ammunition. “The delivery time of the Leopard tank is up to two and a half yearswhile frigates and submarines needÄ… from six to eight years” – Pistorius noted.
Germany wants to be ready for a possible war
– The implementation time itself clearly shows that we are unable to fill the gaps that have arisen over the last 30 years, in one term parliament. But we can pave the way and we did it successfully, added Boris Pistorius.
The German Defense Minister was also asked whether Germany should allocate more than two percent of GDP to defense. – We always have to make sure we get to two percent because this is our commitment to NATO” – replied the minister. But how much money this actually means depends on the size of the gross domestic product – he reserved.
– That's why I prefer to talk about absolute numbers. From 2028 we will need a high-altitude defense budget at least 80 billion and most likely 90 billion euros per yearto meet the requirements arising from the escalating situation (…). We need to fill the gaps that we have in our defense, concluded the minister.
