According to reports from the daily “Bild”, the Federal Office for Civil Protection (BKK) is developing a plan to create more shelters for the population in Germany due to the growing international threat. BKK is currently examining which public buildings could be converted into shelters if necessary, the newspaper reported. This includes government buildings, but also metro stations.
BKK: create shelters in your own homes. An appeal to the Germans
In addition, a special application for mobile phones is to be developed, through which citizens will be able to check the distance to the nearest shelter. BKK also wants to encourage people to set up shelters in their own homes. Basements and garages may be suitable for this purpose. It is unclear when the plan will be finalized.
As the newspaper writes, there are currently too few places in Germany accident crisis situations. According to BKK, there are currently only 579 public shelters across the country for 480,000 people. Since 2007, the bunkers have been gradually dismantled. Building new public shelters would take a generation, BKK chief Ralph Tiesler said. According to the Bild newspaper, BKK's plan also includes an extensive information campaign.
