Germany. Johann Wadephul the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. In April he was in Poland

Johann Wadephul is to become the new head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The future chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the names of CDU politicians who are to become ministers in the future government. This nomination can change Berlin's position towards Moscow and Beijing – says Politico.

The German CDU party officially agreed to a coalition agreement on Monday, which the Christian CDU and CSU parties agreed with social democratic SPD. Bavarian CSU also agreed to this contract. After approval of the contract by CDU and CSU, only SPD consent is missing, which about 358 thousand. Members will decide until Tuesday in the evening.

If SPD also agrees, the coalition agreement will be formally signed on May 5. On May 6, the leader of CDU Friedrich Merz will be elected in the Bundestag as Chancellor German. This requires the support of most deputies in a secret ballot, i.e. winning 316 votes. CDU/CSU and SPD have 328 votes together – reminds the German diary of tagesschau.

Johann Wadephul – Who is he

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Merza's government is to be covered by Johann Wadephul. The 62-year-old politician is currently responsible in the CDU/CSU parliamentary club for foreign policy, defense and contacts with the Council of Europe. In December 2024, he accompanied Merz on a trip to Kiev and Warsaw, and in April this year he had survey talks in Warsaw, London, Rome and Paris.

Writing about his last visit to Warsaw, Deutsche Welle noted that Poland depends first on the construction site in Berlin for Polish victims of war and occupation, financial assistance for the living victims of the Third Reich and the contribution of Germany to the security of Poland in the face of the threat of Poland Russia. “We are still working on it,” said Wadephul, quoted by Deutsche Welle on April 13.

In the speeches in the Bundestag and in the press interviews, Wadephul proved to be known from the sharp criticism of Russia and the demand of passing on Ukraine German Taurus maneuvering missiles. His statements, however, are more balanced than Norbert Roettgen or Roderich Kiesewetter, more expressive politicians who were also taken into account as potential bosses of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nomination Wadephul – which means

The nomination of Wadephul, completely loyal to the chancellor, means that Merz will have more influence on foreign policy than his predecessors, thanks to which it will be more uniform. Until now, the head of diplomacy was a representative of the coalition party, which was a source of competition between the Chancellor and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An additional reinforcement of the Chancellor as a foreign policy implementer is the National Security Council at the Chancellor's Office. The planned body is to take over some of the existing competences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Politico portal assessed on Monday that the choice of Wadephul as the head of diplomacy “means a significant turn towards foreign policy more oriented to security and transatlantic and can change the position of Berlin towards Moscow and Beijing.” Politico reminded about the critical position of Wadephul towards the growing influence China in Europe.
