Six people were injured on Friday in a knife attack in the city of Mannheim, Germany. The attacker was shot by the police and then detained.

On Friday at the market square in Mannheim Germany During an event organized by the Pax Europa movement, which is critical of Islam, a knife attack took place. According to the prosecutor's office, the police and the Baden-Württemberg investigation office, the injured included five members of the movement, and the attacker also injured a policeman.

The knifeman stabbed the policeman from behind several times in the head area, causing life-threatening injuries. The attacker was shot by another officer. According to information from SWR station, the alleged perpetrator is a 25-year-old man from Afghanistanwho came to Germany in 2013.

According to Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobel, the alleged perpetrator's motive is still unclear. “We cannot say anything yet about the perpetrator's motivation,” the minister is quoted by the Tagesschau portal.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier condemned the act of violence. “There can be no place for violence in our democracy – violence destroys democracy. Freedom of speech is a precious value,” his spokeswoman Cerstin Gammelin wrote on the X platform on Steinmeier's behalf.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the X platform that “the images from Mannheim are terrible.” “Several people were seriously injured by the attacker. (…) Violence is absolutely unacceptable in our democracy. The perpetrator must be severely punished,” he said.
