Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived unexpectedly in Frankfurt am Main in western Germany on Thursday, local police said, warning of “temporary closures and disruptions throughout the region.” Zelensky then went to the American military base in Wiesbaden.
Police in Frankfurt am Main in western Germany said Thursday that Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky he came to town unexpectedly. The police said on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that due to the visit of the Ukrainian president to Hesse “there will be temporary closures and disruptions in the entire Rhine-Main region.”
Zelensky then traveled from Frankfurt to the US military base in Wiesbaden.
Previously, he stayed in Norway after traveling to, among others, Argentina and the USA. “After my visit to Norway, I arrived at the U.S. Army Europe Command, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany. Once again, I was convinced of the excellent quality of American military assistance to Ukraine. We desperately need it to win!” – Zelensky wrote on the X website.
“We expect that the US Congress will soon make a key decision on continuing such important support for Ukraine,” he added.
Zelensky with an appeal to EU leaders
On the same day, Zelensky addressed the participants of the European Union summit in Brussels via video link. – Do not betray people and their faith in Europe – he appealed. The politician thus referred to the planned EU decision to start accession negotiations with Ukraine.
– Europe will not understand if this meeting ends with a smile of satisfaction Vladimir Putin. Today the decision will be made either in Brussels or Moscow, warned Zelensky, quoted by Reuters and Interfax-Ukraine.
– Today is a special day and will go down in our history. History will show whether this (will be – ed.) good or bad for us (solution – ed.). Every word, every step, every action and omission will be recorded. Who fought for what. (…) Europe has taken important decisions and implemented them effectively. I express my gratitude for Europe’s strength. (It is, however – ed.) very important that today (European Union – ed.) did not sink into a lack of decisiveness. Nobody wants Europe to be treated as untrustworthy, argued the president of Ukraine.
In Zelensky’s assessment, the expected EU decision to start negotiations with Kiev is “needed by people in the trenches, shooting down drones and missiles every night, as well as by all those working to ensure that children can learn – even in conditions of constant Russian terror, and that doctors can save lives.” “.
A two-day meeting of the European Council began on Thursday in Brussels. The agenda included topics including: the situation in Ukraine, EU enlargement, the Multiannual Financial Framework (budget), the Middle East, security and defense, migration, as well as the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia. Poland is represented by the Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Hungary maintains its opposition to the start of accession talks with Ukraine, the Prime Minister said on Thursday Viktor Orbán. In the opinion of the head of the Hungarian government, the authorities in Kiev have met only three of the seven conditions set by the EU, which means that there are no grounds to start negotiations.
Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022, and last June the European Council granted Ukraine candidate country status. The decision to start accession talks must be taken unanimously.
