Strikes at airports in Germany

A Verdi representative said that if pay and working conditions did not improve, these problems would persist and it would be necessary to prepare for another stormy summer at German airports.

Lufthansa has already announced that it will have to reduce its summer schedule due to staff shortages.

The strikers’ demands have so far been rejected by employers who have not yet submitted their own proposal. Talks are expected to continue next week. Verdi leader Frank Werneke previously warned that “the next strikes will have a different dimension”. “If employers don’t make a good offer next week, this protest will be just a taste of what’s to come,” Werneke told the BBC.

Among those affected by the strikes was the airline Lufthansa. The airline said it had to cancel more than 1,300 flights and suspend operations at Frankfurt and Munich airports, Reuters reported.

The airline declined to give an estimate of the cost of the strike, but has claimed on previous occasions that such a protest would cost around €10-15 million a day, the agency reported.
