According to the Bundeswehr’s earlier planning data, it is to purchase 45 to 60 heavy transport helicopters for around EUR 4 billion in 2023-2029.

The Sikorsky CH-53 is an American heavy transport helicopter. The German military has been using these machines since the 1970s and intends to retire them by 2030. According to the Reuters agency, the disadvantages of these outdated machines were particularly felt by German soldiers during missions in Afghanistanwhen the CH-53 required a lot of maintenance to be able to operate in the air.
