In connection with the death of a 12-year-old girl from the German town of Freudenberg, two of her friends, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old, were detained, local police announced on Tuesday. Both pleaded guilty. As they are not yet 14 years old, they will not be criminally liable under German law.

The 12-year-old was last seen around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. 5:30 p.m. when she left her friend’s and headed home. When she did not reach him, her parents reported the matter to the police. At a press conference on Tuesday, officers said that two girls, aged 12 and 13, who were friends of the victim, are suspected of committing the murder. According to information provided by the police, both pleaded guilty.

As the Deutsche Welle portal explains, under German law, children are criminally liable after reaching the age of 14. German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, quoted by “Stern”, stressed that although the suspects are not threatened with a standard trial for adults, “the legal system knows other ways to react, such as child and youth welfare law and family law”.

During Tuesday’s conference, the police also explained that the cause of death of the 12-year-old was probably exsanguination. There were several puncture wounds on the girl’s body. On Monday, officers said there was nothing to indicate sexual assault.

The school attended by the 12-year-old girl was not closed, but child psychologists appeared on the spot to provide the students with the necessary help. Flags across the city were lowered to half-mast as a sign of mourning.
