German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit confirmed on Wednesday that Germany they will send to Ukraine Leopard 2 tanks and will approve their transfer by partner countries. – As a first step, Germany will deliver 14 machines to Ukraine. Exercises of Ukrainian soldiers in Germany are also to start soon, the spokesman said, adding that together with the tanks, Berlin will provide the necessary logistics and ammunition.

Soon after, the chancellor gave a speech Olaf Scholz. Speaking about the crisis, he said that “the cause of all the challenges is the Russian Federation’s horrific imperialist attack on Ukraine, a horrific war that has shaken the foundations agreed in Europe for decades.”

– Such grounds include, for example, the fact that it is forbidden to cross borders using violence, to violate the borders of independent states. That’s what happened, which is why we’re seeing a complete paradigm shift today,’ he noted. “That is why we must communicate with our allies and provide support to Ukraine together: financial aid, humanitarian aid, but also arms supplies,” he added.

Scholz assured that “Germany is at the forefront and will always remain at the forefront when it comes to supporting Ukraine.”

Scholz: It is and was the right decision not to act under pressure

Commenting on the transfer of the Leopards, Scholz said that “this is the result of very intensive talks with international allies.” – I would like to say clearly that this is and was the right decision, that we did not act under pressure, but first we discussed such decisions together – he noted.

– Our goal is to supply tank battalions. Many countries have expressed their willingness to send tanks. We will coordinate these efforts and proceed step by step. These will be Leopard 2A6s, which come from the resources of the Bundeswehr. We will also train Ukrainian soldiers, we will also take care of maintenance and logistics. Partner countries will have the green light to supply these equipment, the Chancellor described.

He also pointed out that some citizens are afraid of what Germany’s latest decision on the transfer of tanks may mean. I would like to reassure these people. Please trust us. These are internationally agreed actions, he said.

The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank produced by the German concern Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Its first versions entered the equipment of the German army in 1979-1980. Since then, new versions of the vehicles have been created. Currently, Leopard 2s are used by many European countries, including Germany, Poland, TurkeySpain, GreeceDenmark and Norway, as well as non-NATO countries – Sweden, Finland, Austria and Switzerland.
