Gieraltowice. Railroad trackman struck by lightning. He was in a building on the outskirts

On Friday morning, at a railway crossing in Gierałtowice (Śląskie Voivodeship), lightning struck a lineman staying in the building. A man with dizziness, numbness in the hand and pain in the heart area was taken to the hospital.

The incident took place on Friday around 7.20 in a small building next to the tracks that serves as a turnpike service station. The fire brigade dispatcher received a report of a railway worker being struck by lightning.

– The victim was inside the building. The man was conscious, complaining of dizziness, pain in the chest area and numbness of the upper limb. Firefighters supported him, and then handed him over to the medical rescue team – says Damian Dudek, press officer of the fire brigade in Gliwice.

The electrical charge passed into the building

Karol Jakubowski from the press team PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA noted that a special commission would determine the exact circumstances of the event and shared its preliminary findings.

– They show that during violent lightning discharges, lightning struck the railway infrastructure, and the electric charge passed to the building where the employee was located and there was an electric shock. An ambulance was called to the scene. The worker was conscious. The incident had no impact on train traffic, Jakubowski said.
