The 60-year-old entered one of the churches in Giżycko (Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship) and stole money from three donation boxes, which totaled about PLN 1,000. It was recorded by surveillance cameras installed in the temple. The man was arrested the same day. He was charged with burglary.
The incident happened on Friday (February 24). As reported by senior aspirant Iwona Chruścińska from the Poviat Police Headquarters in Giżycko, the man entered the open temple, where there were treasure chests for donations.
– He took the money when he opened it. The whole situation was recorded by surveillance cameras installed in the church. The recording was secured by the police. Determining the identity of the perpetrator was a matter of time, the police officer said.
They got some money back
It turned out to be a 60-year-old resident of the Giżycko commune. Chruścińska added that at his place of residence, the officers found banknotes and coins, a screwdriver, a folding kit and documents – an ID card and a driving license that did not belong to him.
The 60-year-old was arrested and brought to the police station. The police confirmed that the man had a previous conviction for theft offences, for which he was serving a prison sentence. The officers recovered some of the money. The man was charged with burglary, the press officer of the Giżycko police said.
The prosecutor applied a preventive measure to the 60-year-old in the form of police supervision. The man will have to appear twice a week at the Poviat Police Headquarters in Giżycko.
