Glenda Jackson – who was she?

Glenda Jackson was born in 1936 in Birkenhead. As the Guardian writes, as a child she dreamed of becoming a dancer. Over time, she discovered that she liked acting and, at the urging of a friend, joined the local theater group Townswomen’s Guild and applied to one of the drama schools, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), which she got into. She made her professional stage debut in 1957 in Worthing in Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables. In 1964, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), which brings together British theaters. Playwright David Edgar later recalled her performance in Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade as one of the best he had ever seen, in a production that “changed British theater forever”.

Jackson made her film debut in 1963 with a minor role in Sporting Life. She gained fame for her role in “Women in Love” in 1969, which brought her an Oscar for Best Actress. She received her second Oscar in 1974 for her role in Love Overtime.

In 1992, she decided to give up her film career to devote herself to politics. In the same year, she was elected to the British House of Commons for the Labor Party, where she held the position until 2015, when she resigned. Then, after a 23-year break, she returned to acting. She appeared in the plays “King Lear” in 2016 and “Three Tall Women” in 2018, and in 2019 she played in the movie “Elizabeth Is Missing”. For her role in this production, she received the British Academy Film Award in 2020.
