Gliwice. Archbishop Marian Gołębiewski took part in church celebrations. Two years ago he was banned from the Vatican

On Saturday, the episcopal consecration ceremony and ingress of Bishop Sławomir Oder to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Gliwice. The ceremony was attended by Archbishop Senior Marian Gołębiewski, who in 2021 was banned from participating in such ceremonies.

At the end of January this year, the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland announced that Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the current bishop of Gliwice, Jan Kopiec, and appointed Fr. Sławomir Oder – spiritual father of the priests of the diocese of Toruń, and in the past m.in. postulator of the cause of beatification and canonization John Paul II.

On Saturday, the episcopal ordination ceremony and the ingress of bp. Oder to the Gliwice Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. He was consecrated by the apostolic nuncio to Poland, Archbishop Salvatore Pennachio, and was assisted, among others, by the senior bishop of the Diocese of Gliwice, Jan Kopiec, and Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwiszsenior archbishop of the Archdiocese of Krakow.

The ceremony was attended by many other clergy, such as Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz or the chairman of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki. Among the representatives of the clergy one could also find the Senior Archbishop Marian Gołębiewski, who since August 2021, he has been banned from participating in any public celebrations, both church and secular.

“Acting on the basis of the provisions of the Code of Canon Law and motu proprio Pope Francis Vos estis lux mundi, The Holy See – following formal notifications – conducted proceedings regarding the reported negligence of Archbishop Marian Gołębiewski in cases of sexual abuse of minors by some priests from the Koszalin-Kołobrzeg diocese during his episcopal ministry (1996-2004) and from the Archdiocese of Wrocław (2004-2013)” – it was reported on the website of the Archdiocese of Wrocław.

In addition to the ban, Gołębiewski was ordered to “lead a life of penance and prayer” and to pay “an appropriate amount from private funds to the St. Joseph Foundation for the prevention and assistance of victims of sexual abuse.”
