The latest research shows a local decrease in oxygen concentration in water to 28 percent in the Gliwice Canal, the Ministry of Climate and Environment announced on Monday. At the same time, the results of tests carried out by the Central Research Laboratory of CIEP were published, indicating the presence of “golden alga” in the Odra River. Water aerating action by firefighters is underway.

On Saturday, 450 kilograms of dead fish were caught from the Gliwice Canal, about 390 kilograms on Sunday, and 290 kilograms on Monday – a total of just over a ton. Environmental protection and veterinary services were sent to the site to collect water and dead fish samples. Initially, the cause of the mass fish kills was considered to be a sharp drop in oxygen in the water flowing through the canal.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment announced on Monday afternoon that the latest research shows locally a decrease in oxygen concentration in water to 28 percent. “Due to the situation, the Opolskie Voivode decided to aerate. At the same time, analyzes of water samples are being carried out” – it was reported.

Similar information was provided by the Opolskie Voivode. – Laboratory suspicions are that fish deaths are caused by oxygen deficiency, insufficient oxygenation of water – said Sławomir Kłosowski at the conference.

In the samples “golden algae”

Meanwhile, on the website dedicated to the Odra River, it was explained that the latest results of tests carried out by the Central Research Laboratory of CIEP (from June 10 this year) indicate the presence of “golden algae” in the samples taken in the Kędzierzyn Canal and the Gliwice Canal. And that would mean a sharp increase in oxygen concentration in the water rather than a decrease.

This invasive algae has been reported to have appeared at the following points and sizes: Gliwicki Canal, Nowa Wieś lock bridge – 51 million cells/litre; Gliwice Canal, bridge on the National Road 40, ul. Friendship – 8 thousand cells/liter; Kędzierzyn Canal, before entering the Gliwice Canal – 27 million cells/liter.

“The services are conducting further analyzes to explain the causes of the fish kills in June this year. The results will be provided immediately after they are determined” – they were assured.

How to explain this paradox? According to the message, it is possible that several different phenomena led to the fish kill. “The findings of the experts of the scientific team operating at the Ministry of Climate and Environment show that the toxic bloom of ‘golden algae’ is accompanied by a sharp increase in oxygen concentration, even up to 200 percent. The number of ‘golden algae’ cells found this year is even several times lower than in the previous year In the summer of 2022, during the toxic bloom of the ‘golden algae’, the number of this algae in the waters of the Gliwice Canal exceeded 400 million and reached 600 million cells / liter” – it was indicated.

It was added, however, that after the actions of neutralization of the “golden alga” carried out on May 29 and 30 at the Sławęcice and Nowa Wieś locks in the Gliwice Canal, the tests carried out in the next few days after the end of the action did not confirm the presence of this alga in the waters of the canal.

“It is probable that the ‘golden alga’ got into it along with the water current from the Kędzierzyn Canal. Scientists emphasize that the appearance of ‘golden alga’ is not always synonymous with the release of toxins that are deadly to fish. Therefore, further detailed “The results will be known in the next few days. Measurements of water parameters are continued. Current activities are coordinated by the Opolskie Voivode” – it was explained.

Water aeration is in progress

From Monday, the water of the Gliwice Canal is aerated in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. The action is carried out with the help of fire pumps at three points, where several hundred kilograms of dead fish were caught in the previous days.

Capt. Piotr Krok from the Kędzierzyn-Koźle fire brigade assured that firefighters will continue the action of aerating the water of the canal as long as it is necessary in those places that will be indicated by the coordinating action on behalf of the Opole Voivode.
