He was 21 when his leg was amputated. It wasn’t until twelve years later that he decided to wear shorts. For a long time he struggled with depression, but in time sport appeared in his life. Today, Piotr Kąkol from Głogów (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship) wins laurels in sports arenas and inspires people with disabilities to act. He became the Polish champion in the shot put and the runner-up in the discus throw. He silently thinks about the Paralympics.

– For me, a 21-year-old guy, it was an extremely difficult period at that time. As if you kept telling yourself that everything would be fine, but it really wasn’t. I had major mood swings. My leg was cut off in the hospital, it was completely shattered and there was no chance to save it. I took it very hard – says Piotr Kąkol in an interview with tvn24.pl.

Piotr was involved in a traffic accident. He saw the condition of his leg. He lost it at the thigh. – For six hours after the amputation, I didn’t really know what to do with myself, how to behave. It wasn’t until the nurses came to change the dressing that I cried. I remember a moment in the hospital when I was afraid to look at her. It was a difficult moment, but internally I pulled myself together quickly – he admits.

Depression set in

However, a crisis appeared in Piotr’s life. Yes, after about two years. – I didn’t leave the house, I locked myself up. I don’t even know when or how. After 12 years, I only dared to wear shorts for the first time. I defended myself against the fact that I had a prosthesis – recalls Kąkol.

After a leg amputation, he struggled with many problems of everyday life. – It was really hard. I was wondering if I would be able to function.

Thanks to a friend, sport appeared in Piotr’s life, and more specifically para-athletics – shot put and discus throw. – It was seven years after the accident. I got hooked right away,” he says.

Sport gave him a new life

It is, among others, thanks to sport that Piotr is today a different man who breaks stereotypes. – I want to show all those who struggle with similar problems that there is nothing to be ashamed of. I recommend people with disabilities any physical activity and striving to integrate in this way. A person sees that he is not alone in these problems, and that other people sometimes have it worse, and they manage very well – he adds.

By day he works as a plumber. However, he always throws off his working clothes after 4 pm and rushes to the projection field at the stadium at Bema Street in Toruń. It is there that you can meet him for the next two hours, regardless of the season. The result of this are his numerous successes. Recently, he became the Polish champion in the shot put and the runner-up in the discus throw. He dreams of participating in the Paralympic Games.

– It’s fun to chase your dreams and I would definitely like to compete in the Paralympics one day. For me, however, the most important thing is that I am fit – emphasizes Piotr Kąkol.

Helping people after amputations

Plumbing, training, family. It’s not everything. Piotr is also active in the Business Run Foundation, which helps people after amputations. – About 100 people from different parts of the country are under my care. I am the first point of contact for people who need help. I talk to them, I advise them. I did not have this opportunity 21 years ago, this knowledge, and now I want to share it with other people – he points out in an interview with tvn24.pl.

Piotr very often repeats to his amputee charges that some doors close in their lives, but also a lot opens. He himself is the best example of this, and he tries to instill this motto in them all the time.
