Golden Raspberries – nominations, list

Must read

Six nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards for Francis Ford Coppola's “Megalopolis”, including for the worst film and director, are probably a blow to the winner of five Oscars. The list of nominees for embarrassing awards also included “Joker: Folie à Deux” by Todd Phillips, “Madame Web” by SJ Clarkson and the bizarre “Reagan” by Sean McNamara. Traditionally, the anti-Oscar nominations were announced before the Oscars were announced. The list of nominations is strange and it seems that the body awarding them is closer to the desire to create noise than to what was behind the Golden Raspberries over 40 years ago, when it was founded.

This year's list of nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards seems surprising. For the first time in years, there is no anti-Oscar favorite among the titles nominated for the Oscars. There was also a lack of, among others: it seemed certain, i.e. “Gladiator II” by Ridley Scott. What is surprising is that there are as many as seven nominations in the main categories for the moderately successful, but certainly not as bad as the other titles on the list, Tod Phillips' film “Joker: Folie à Deux” by Warner Bros. belonging, similarly to, among others, TVN24, to Warner Bros. Discovery.

Another surprise is the fact that five films received six nominations each. These are: “Borderlands” by JC Chandor with the participation of, among others, Cate Blanchett (the actress herself was also nominated), “Joker: Folie à Deux”, “Madame Web”, “Megalopolis” and probably the greatest curiosity in this list, “Reagan” by Sean McNamara. Four nominations went to Jerry Seinfeld's “No Frosting,” made for Netflix, “Kraven the Hunter” received three, and “The Raven,” a remake of the 1994 film, received two.

Awards given for sensational purposes?

Awarded since 1981, the Golden Raspberries were initially good fun and a good-natured mockery of the mistakes of American filmmakers, but over time they became primarily an opportunity for sensation. Today, they raise considerable controversy because the choices of members are often highly controversial. The most prestigious film magazines overseas, such as “Variety” and “The Hollywood Reporter”, leave no stone unturned in the elections for the Golden Raspberry Awards.

This year, the number of nominations for the “Joker” sequel must be surprising. The film received mixed reviews – from favorable to very critical – and it seems that compared to absolute nightmares such as the above-mentioned “Reagan”, “Without Icing” or “Borderlands”, it presents a completely different level of cinema. And the nominations for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are completely undeserved.

But they are the ones that are talked about the most and loudest. Just like the nomination for the most outstanding British star today, Cate Blanchett. Moreover, the nomination was undeserved, although the film itself – based on a popular video game – is rather pointless. Interestingly, none of the other, less successful actors who played bigger roles in it were “punished” with a nomination? Well, there probably wouldn't be such a response then.

The large number of nominations for Coppola's “Megalopolis” is not surprising, because the legendary filmmaker got completely lost when trying to make a film that was supposed to be his magnum opus. It took him over 40 years to mature, he financed it entirely himself by selling his beloved vineyards and it failed completely. Nevertheless, the nomination for the entire cast of “Megalopolis” who fought hard to save this picture seems unnecessary and undeserved.

Top tops in the “shit of the year” category

Although Todd Phillips' sequel to “Joker” received the most nominations, it is unlikely that, compared to truly bizarre productions, it would ultimately win the Golden Raspberry Awards. And even more so its actors.

Anyone who has seen the nominated films must admit that “Borderlands” by JC Chandor or “Reagan” are absolute tops in the “shit of the year” category. The problem is that the group of people awarding the Golden Raspberry Award does not seem to distinguish a very bad film from a conceptually and formally questionable picture, such as Phillips' “Joker: Folie à Deux”.

The director of the latter seriously offended the fans of the cult film “Joker” from 2019 by ruthlessly deconstructing his hero in the sequel. He contradicted absolutely everything he made us believe in the first film, and as a result, he was criticized by some critics and viewers. I'm not a fan of this film, but I can objectively appreciate its strengths and the creator's perversity.

Joker in the second partWarner Bros

Anyone who wants to see a really bad movie, apart from the above-mentioned “Borderlands” (whose terrified screenwriter withdrew his name), should watch “Reagan” by McNamara. This film is like a graphomaniac love letter to the 40th president USA. The director borrowed the plot structure from “Citizen Kane”, so he aimed high while making a hagiography that was sweet to a degree rarely seen. Watching her is a real torture. If we add to this the terrible acting of Dennis Quaid presenting a caricature of the former president, we have a pseudo-work worth all the Golden Raspberries. Meanwhile, the film's director was not nominated for Malina at all.

Apparently, the raspberry committee decided that Coppola and Phillips, with nominations in this category, would arouse more interest. And they were right.

For the same reason, people were so happy with nominations earlier, among others: Robert de Niro or Mel Gibson. It's true that both of them appeared in very poor films, but they themselves still didn't go below – let's call it “decent” level in their acting. And although Golden Raspberries ultimately (most often) go to terrible productions and weak acting performances, for a few weeks there is a possibility of “winning” for the greatest characters in Hollywood will be a source of great sensation.

With each passing year, it becomes more and more difficult to shake off the feeling that those who award these embarrassing awards really only care about her.

Golden Raspberries

Golden Raspberry Awards (abbr. Razzie) are anti-awards given to the worst films, invented by film critic John JB Wilson in 1980.

As usual, the nominees are selected by members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation by voting. Anyone who has paid an annual membership fee of $40 or $500 for a lifetime membership can play the role of a strict juror. Then you just need to send in your ballots. This year, a group of over 1,200 voters did so, which does not seem a staggering number. More people then vote for the winners of these embarrassing laurels, who will be announced on March 1 – as usual, the day before the Oscars.

The Golden Raspberry statuette is made of plastic painted gold. It takes the form of an artificial raspberry placed on a roll of Super 8 film. The prize is worth approximately $4.89.

The only Polish film to win a Malina award is “365 Dni”, which in 2021 received an award in the “worst script” category.
