Google has laid off over a thousand staff throughout numerous departments since January tenth. CEO Sundar Pichai’s message to staff is to brace for extra cuts.

“We’ve got bold targets and can be investing in our massive priorities this yr,” Pichai instructed all Google staff on Wednesday in an inner memo, a part of which was shared with me. “The fact is that to create the capability for this funding, we have now to make robust selections.”

To date, these “robust selections” have included sudden layoffs and reorganizations in Google’s hardware, ad sales, belief and security, purchasing, maps, core engineering, and YouTube teams. In his memo, Pichai mentioned these cuts have been about “eradicating layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas,” and he confirmed what many inside Google have been fearing: that extra “position eliminations” are to come back.

“Many of those adjustments are already introduced, although to be upfront, some groups will proceed to make particular useful resource allocation choices all year long the place wanted, and a few roles could also be impacted,” he wrote.

“These position eliminations aren’t on the scale of final yr’s reductions, and won’t contact each crew,” he mentioned, referencing when Google cut 12,000 jobs this time final yr. “However I do know it’s very tough to see colleagues and groups impacted.”
