President Andrzej Duda is “seriously considering” the government’s motion to introduce a state of emergency at the border with Belarus. Duda spoke on Tuesday together with the Minister of Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, and stressed that “strengthening of the border is necessary”.

The president informed that the conversation concerned the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, the situation in Afghanistan and the Russian Zapad-2021 maneuvers, the culmination of which is expected on September 10-16.

On Tuesday, the Council of Ministers addressed the president, Fr. introduction of a state of emergency in the area of part of the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodships. It is to be in force for 30 days in the border zone and cover 115 towns in Podlasie and 68 in the Lublin region.
The president stressed that “border reinforcements are necessary”. – Government initiatives are currently very seriously considered by me. We are analyzing in detail the resolution of the Council of Ministers concerning the introduction of a state of emergency in the border zone, the strengthening of the border – he said.
He announced that he would make a decision “in the near future”. – I hope it will meet with favor of the Polish Sejm. I hope it will also be approved by the opposition MPs – he added.
Pursuant to the regulations, the president “immediately” examines the government’s application for the introduction of a state of emergency and issues – if he deems it necessary – a regulation on the introduction of a state of emergency. The regulation may be repealed by the Sejm.
