With the Polish Commissioner for Agriculture, we were able to achieve great success and carry out the reform. But it was a purely political nomination, not a substantive one – said former Agriculture Minister Artur Balazs on TVN24 about Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski.

The guest of “Piasecki’s Conversation” spoke about the issue of Ukrainian grain and the sudden ban on the import of agricultural products from a neighbor introduced by the government in Warsaw.

Since May last year, after the decision of the European Commission to abolish the duty, Ukrainian grain has been flowing into the EU. However, it did not leave Poland to a large extent, at the same time lowering the domestic purchase price. After protests by Polish farmers, the government on Saturday introduced a ban on imports of Ukraine agricultural products. The long list of products includes cereals, milk, eggs and meat.

– I am worried about this situation both on our Polish market and on the European market. I don’t think it was a good and well-thought-out decision. I am also talking about the decisions of the European Commission, and in particular of our Commissioner – commented Balazs.

– I really wanted Poland to have its commissioner for agriculture, I thought that we could reform European agriculture – which needs real reform – in our fashion and that this commissioner would leave a significant mark on the course of events – he added.

However, as it turned out – he continued – “it was a purely political nomination, not a substantive one.” – Because he should be the first to point out the consequences that it will bring when making this decision. It was visible – emphasized the TVN24 guest.

– I believe that we could have achieved great success and reformed agriculture, and here above all PIS will suffer a political defeat. This shows that it is impossible to nominate people who are not qualified for important positions in the state or in the European Union with impunity, and that this has very serious consequences, said the former minister.
