Grain is his gift to feed humanity, its destruction is a grave insult, said Pope Francis during a Sunday prayer at the Vatican. The head of the Catholic Church appealed to Russia to return to the Black Sea grain initiative.

Addressing the thousands of faithful who have come to the Vatican for the midday Angelus prayer, the pope asked: – Let us not stop praying for the martyred woman Ukrainewhere war destroys everything, including grain. This is a heavy insult to God, because grain is his gift to feed humanity.

The pope added that “the cry of millions of brothers and sisters who suffer from hunger rises to heaven”. “I appeal to my brothers, to the authorities of the Russian Federation, to resume the Black Sea initiative so that grain can be transported safely,” Francis said.

Grain Initiative

The grain agreement, guaranteeing the safe export of grain and fertilizers from Ukraine via the Black Sea, was concluded in July 2022 by Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the UN.

This agreement has already been extended several times, but on July 4 Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated that it did not see the possibility of continuing this initiative. Russia has threatened not to renew the deal because several of its demands for grain and fertilizer exports have not been met.
