Andrzej Poczobut became the Journalist of the Year during the Grand Press gala. A correspondent of “Gazeta Wyborcza” was arrested in March by the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and has been in detention in Belarus ever since. The attitude of Andrzej Poczobut is “a testimony that freedom of speech has no price and that freedom of speech is not negotiable,” said Jarosław Kurski, deputy editor-in-chief of “GW”, accepting the award on behalf of Poczobut.

– I accept this award as a deposit and I hope that soon they will be able to present it to Andrzej, as a free man, personally – emphasized Kurski. As he added, “this award is a symbol of the solidarity of the entire journalistic community, not only with Andrzej Poczobut, but with all journalists imprisoned for freedom of speech.”

– Andrzej Poczobut’s strength is not that he wrote an important text this year. His attitude was much more important than many a reportage, commentary or journalism. This attitude is a testimony that freedom of speech has no price and that freedom of speech is not negotiable – said Kurski.

– And Andrzej Poczobut was so beautifully tempted. It was enough for him to appear in front of Lukashenka’s cameras, to say that he was ashamed, sorry, sorry. The prison gates would open for him, he would be released, he would see his family. But Andrzej chose black, prison bread, a stricter regime. There is no contact with the family, he can only contact his lawyer. He had COVID-19 and was treated with aspirin. And so 257 days – he said.

As Kurski added, Andrzej Poczobut shows through his attitude that “you do not trade in a free word, that it is inalienable, that you cannot sell yourself to any government, be it central or local, to any party, politicians or oligarchs”.
