On Kontakt 24 we received a recording from Mr. Norbert, a truck driver who drives in Great Britain. The video shows a bright object that flies in the night sky. It is a car, which is a very bright meteor – explained Karol Wójcicki, promoter of astronomy and author of the blog “Head in the stars.
– I was driving south on the M5 towards beautiful Cornwall, and at one point, outside the city of Taunton, I saw a big flash. It was very large and very long – described in an interview with the editorial office of Kontakt 24 Mr. Norbert. He added that the flare was visible on Saturday after 6 o’clock.
As Karol Wójcicki, the promoter of astronomy and the author of the blog “With his head in the stars”, reported, the recording “clearly shows a car, i.e. a very bright meteor”.
A meteor is a trace left behind by a meteoroid, a piece of rock that orbits around the sun. Bolides are particularly bright meteors, brighter than -4th magnitude (mag – magnitude, the unit of measurement used to indicate the brilliance of stars), so they are brighter than Venus. By comparison, a full moon has a magnitude of -12.6 magnitude and a sun -26.7 magnitude.
“I have never seen such an expressive phenomenon in my life”
The man noted that he had never seen one like this. – I have never seen such an expressive phenomenon in my life, and I have already covered two million kilometers of European roads, where there is always time to observe everything around – he said. Mr. Norbert emphasized that at the sight of the “shooting star” he managed to make a wish. However, it does not reveal what. – In my mind I quickly made a wish, and will it come true? Time will tell. I wish everyone that your dreams will come true not only during such phenomena, but always – he concluded.
What else will we see in the sky in October? Full Moon, Moon and Jupiter conjunction, Orionid swarm
In October, there are a few more astronomical attractions waiting for us, for which we can prepare ourselves for observations.
On October 15, the Moon and Jupiter will conjunction. The phenomenon will start at 12.02. From Warsaw, it will be visible from 6pm, 15 degrees above the south-eastern horizon, when it starts to get dark. You will be able to observe them until 00.14. In this case also the naked eye of the observer is enough, if the weather is good.
On Wednesday, October 20, a full moon awaits us. The October full moon is called the Hunters Full Moon. The maximum of the phenomenon will take place at 16.57.
In October, we will also be able to watch the rain of falling stars in the sky. All because of the Orionids, related to the journey of Halley’s comet. These meteors are active from October 2 to November 7. Their maximum falls on the night of October 20-21. This year, however, the phenomenon could be disturbed by a full moon – our natural satellite will flood the night sky with glow.
