New banknotes with the likeness of King Charles III entered circulation in Great Britain on Wednesday, almost two years after he took the throne. This is one of the last important stages of the transition to the reign of Queen Elizabeth's son.

The new banknotes feature an engraving based on Karol's photo from 2013. Unlike banknotes from his mother's reign, there is no crown on his head.

Charles' image will appear on new banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 pounds. Bank England announced that banknotes will be introduced gradually, and the previous ones with the image of Queen Elizabeth will remain in use until they wear out or are damaged. The bank also warned that despite the introduction of new banknotes, it may take several months before they can be seen in regular circulation.

“This approach is in line with guidance from the Royal Household to minimize the environmental and financial impact of this change,” the Bank of England said in a statement.

The design of the new banknotes was revealed in December 2022, shortly after coins with the image of King Charles entered circulation. Apart from the portrait of the monarch, the appearance of the banknotes remains unchanged – the reverse will still feature Sir Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner and Alan Turing.
