UK passenger car production fell to a 66-year low in 2022, the Association of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said. It was explained that the decisions of Honda to close the factory in Swindon and Stellantis to stop production of the Vauxhall Astra in Ellesmere Port contributed to this, among others.

Disruptions to supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and a global semiconductor shortage are the main reasons for this situation, but the automotive industry indicates that the British government is not doing enough to encourage new investment in the country.

Outlook for 2023

According to data provided by SMMT, 775,014 cars were built in the UK last year, a decrease of almost 10 per cent. compared to 857.6 thous. produced in 2021 and a decrease of 40.5 percent. compared to 1.3 million in pre-Covid 2019, when production last exceeded one million units.

The SMMT explained that this worst result since 1956 was contributed to by Honda’s decision to close its Swindon plant in July 2021 and Stellantis to cease production of the Vauxhall Astra at Ellesmere Port in April 2022 and the production of electric vans there. The positive aspect according to the association is that 30.2 percent. of cars produced in 2022 had an electric or hybrid drive. In total, there were up to 234 thousand. units, an increase of 4.5%. compared to 2021 and the highest number in history.

SMMT also believes that the lifting of covid restrictions in Chinafrom which many components are imported, in 2023 the production of all cars in Great Britain may increase by approx. 15%.

Consequences of Brexit

The automotive industry believes the government should do more to attract new investment. It is noteworthy that since 2016, when the British decided to withdraw from the European Union, in each subsequent year production has been lower than in the previous one, although one of the benefits of Brexit was to be freed from EU regulations on state aid.
