Prince Harry will receive a “significant amount” of compensation as part of the settlement reached with the publisher of the Daily Mirror, his lawyer David Sherborne said on Friday. The younger son of King Charles III was one of several celebrities who filed a lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers, accusing the publishing house of unlawfully interfering with their private lives in order to publish the articles.
Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) – publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People – is to cover all of Prince Harry’s legal costs, starting with an initial payment of £400,000.
The procedure took place with the knowledge of the publishing house’s managers
In December 2023, the court already awarded Harry PLN 140,600. pounds compensation for 15 articles that were created between the end of 2003 and April 2009 as a result of tapping his phone or other unlawful collection of information. The court ruled that MGN newspapers used wiretapping and other illegal methods of collecting information on a large scale in the years 2006-2011, and this was done with the knowledge of the publishing house’s directors.
The new settlement concerns the violation of the prince’s privacy in connection with another 115 articles. “MGN will pay the Duke of Sussex a significant additional amount in compensation and all costs associated with his claim,” Sherborne said in court on Friday.
The publisher, in turn, said it was pleased to have reached an agreement that “gives our company further clarity to move forward following events that occurred many years ago and for which we have apologized.”
Lawsuit against MGN
Harry, the younger son King Charles IIIwas one of several celebrities who filed a lawsuit against MGN, accusing the publishing house of unlawfully interfering with their private lives in order to publish the articles.
Last year, the court qualified 33 articles out of almost 150 mentioned in the lawsuit for consideration in the trial, of which it later found that 15 were the result of unlawful collection of information. An additional 115 articles included in the lawsuit could have been the subject of another trial if a settlement had not been reached.
“After our victory in December, Mirror Group finally accepted the rest of my claim, which would consist of two more trials, additional evidence and 115 more articles. Everything we said happened at Mirror Group actually happened and even to a much worse extent, as the court said in its extremely damning judgment,” Harry said in a statement that was read in court by his lawyer.
