London Metropolitan Police are re-investigating 1,633 allegations of sexual and domestic violence involving police officers after one officer was found to be a serial rapist.

On Monday 48-year-old David Carrick, who served with the police force from 2001 until his arrest in October 2021, pleaded guilty to 49 offenses, mostly of a sexual nature, in a London court, including 24 rapes of nine women. In addition, it turned out that there were nine reports of his alleged crimes, including rape and acts of domestic violence, before his arrest, but each time they were ignored and Carrick continued his service.

“We failed. I’m sorry. He shouldn’t have been a cop.”

– We failed. Excuse me. He shouldn’t be a cop. This man abused women in the most disgusting way. This is appalling. We have failed women and girls, and indeed we have failed Londoners,” said Chief Constable Mark Rowley.

Police said they would re-examine all 1,633 reports of sexual and domestic violence reported to 1,071 officers over the past 10 years to see if the right decisions were made. In addition, all 45,000 officers will be screened again for possible offences.

Serious problems for the British police

According to a report published last October, there are still hundreds of officers in the London Metropolitan Police facing charges of breaking the law because its disciplinary system is slow and ineffective.

One of the most high-profile cases of breaking the law by a police officer in recent years was the abduction, rape and murder of 33-year-old Sara Everard in March 2021 active-duty Wayne Couzens. Like Carrick, he also served in the unit responsible for the security of government and diplomatic buildings. In his case, too, there have been reports of sexual offenses for a long time. In September 2021 Couzens was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of applying for early release.
