Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt – two more former British ministers – joined on Saturday evening among the applicants for the position of the leader of the Conservative Party, and thus the Prime Minister of Great Britain. The number of candidates has thus increased to eight. Politicians estimate that the procedure will last until the end of August or the beginning of September. Until then, Boris Johnson remains the head of the party and the prime minister of Great Britain.

After that On Thursday (July 7), Boris Johnson announced that he would resign as leader of the Conservative Party, and behind this function of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, there were more candidates to succeed. On Saturday evening this group was joined by two more former British ministers – Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt.

Both were former health ministers

Javid, who has held several different ministerial positions in recent years, was in charge until Tuesday the Ministry of Health. It was his resignation that started a wave of government resignations that forced Prime Minister Boris Johnson to announce his resignation.

The second candidate, Jeremy Hunt, is now the head of the health committee in the House of Commons, and previously was also the minister of health and the minister of foreign affairs. In the previous elections for the Conservative leader, he lost to Boris Johnson in the decisive round.

Hunt can be harmed by it is associated with opposition to Brexit

Both Javid and Hunt had previously announced that they would likely join the race to succeed Johnson.

Hunt was a few weeks ago – while it was still unclear if and when Johnson would leave – ranked as one of the favorites and could be at the forefront of the race. However, it is too closely associated with opposition to Brexit so that in a possible decisive round – when not MPs vote, but all party members – he could win.

Javid may be in the lead as well, but there are a few candidates who are more likely to win than him.

Eight candidates are applying for the position of the Patria leader

The number of people who have already officially announced that they will run as leader of the Conservative Party has risen to eight.

Previously, they did: former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, his successor Nadhim Zahawi, Transport Minister Grant Shapps, head of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Tom Tugendhat, Attorney General England and Wales Suella Braverman and former Deputy Minister for Equal Opportunities Kemi Badenoch.

The group may increase by two more people

This group will most likely soon be joined by Foreign Minister Liz Truss and Trade Policy Minister Penny Mordaunt. Both should count in the fight for a win, especially since earlier Saturday, Defense Minister Ben Wallace, the main favorite, announced that he would not start.

Johnson will remain in office until a replacement is made. The exact election schedule of the new Conservative Party leader will be announced next week, but politicians from this party say they would like the entire procedure to be completed by the end of August or the beginning of September.

It was about allegations against MP Chris Pincher

Recall that the wave of ministerial resignations began after Downing Street admitted that Johnson had known of the allegations against Chris Pincher, MP for his sexual misconduct since 2019, and nevertheless appointed him in February this year as a deputy “whip” , that is, the person who watches the discipline in the deputies’ club.

Despite his resignation announcement, Prime Minister Boris Johnson nominated new ministers on Thursday to replace those who have resigned in the past two days.
