Inspections are starting on Greek beaches to prevent companies and hotels from restricting free access to the seashore, including by erecting illegal structures, reports the Kathimerini website.

The inspectors are to check, among other things, whether the business activity carried out in the occupied area is legal, and if it is found that there is no license, they will impose fines of up to EUR 60,000. The action, which involves the police, prosecutor's office, tax office and local authorities, is intended to prevent obstruction of free public access to the sea, seashore and beach by arbitrary occupation of land and conducting permanent or temporary activities there or organizing events.

Penalties for throwing garbage into the sea

“Throwing rubble, construction materials and all types of waste at public passages into the sea will also be penalized,” writes Kathimerini. Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe and the world. According to data published by the Bank of Greece at the beginning of the year, despite the heatwave and fires, 2023 was a record year for the country in terms of the number of foreign tourists. Greece was visited by 32.7 million people at that time.
