The earthquake was felt in Athens on Monday, with a magnitude of 4.5 tremor recorded before 11 p.m. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded on Monday before 11 p.m. local time in Greece. Its epicenter was located 18 kilometers (11 miles) east of the town of Istiea in the northern part of the island of Euboea.
Shallow but vast
According to information provided by the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers. Due to the relatively shallow location of the source of seismic activity, the quake was felt in a large part of Attica, including the Greek capital. There are no reports of damage or injuries.
Greece lies on major geological faults and earthquakes are common, although they are usually centered offshore and there are no fatalities. In 1999, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Athens and the surrounding area killed 143 people.
