Residents of five towns on the Greek island of Euboea have been ordered to evacuate because of the fire. Fire also broke out on Sunday in the northern part of the island of Corfu, media reported. – On the hills of the island you can see the fire spreading. The fire brigade is on the road all the time – said Agnieszka, who is staying in Corfu, in an interview with the editors of Kontakt24.

The evacuation order on Euboea, the second largest Greek island, concerns a village on the southern tip of the island. Their inhabitants are to move to the city of Karystos in the western part of Euboea.

The Ekhatimerini website quoted Giorgos Kelaiditis, the vice-governor of Central Greece (administrative region), as saying that the situation is difficult.

“The fire may be two kilometers away (from the village), but the wind is strong, (…) the smoke is thick, it’s hard to breathe,” he said.

Fires and evacuations of tens of thousands of tourists in Rhodes

Fires are currently raging on the very popular tourist island of Rhodes. More than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate since Friday. It was – according to the Greek authorities – the largest evacuation in the country’s history. Some travel agencies and airlines canceled Sunday flights to Rhodes.

Between four and five thousand evacuees were accommodated in temporary aid centres. The local authority has asked for donations of mattresses and bedding to provide better conditions for people who have to sleep in schools, sports clubs and conference centres.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened an assistance center at the airport in Rhodes for foreign tourists who want to leave the island. In Athens, the government has set up a special crisis staff that will lead the evacuation of foreign tourists.
