Two tourists have gone missing on the Greek islands of Amorgos and Samos in recent days. Both the American and the Dutch went hiking and did not return. Local services are conducting search operations. Volunteers also help. Greek services remind that the country is currently facing a major heat wave.

Greek authorities are looking for an American tourist who went hiking alone on the island of Amorgos and disappeared. Local authorities say 59-year-old Albert Calibet was reported missing Tuesday afternoon. It was then that his friend reported that the man had not returned from his trip.

They search land and water

According to the Greek public broadcaster ERT News, various services are taking part in the search. These include volunteers from the coast guard and teams from the neighboring islands of Paros and Naxos.

The services are searching the land in an area covering almost a quarter of Amorgos and the coastal waters, the mayor of the island, Eleftherios Karaiskos, told ERT. A drone is being used to search the northern island. Attempts are also underway to trace Calibet's phone. His number is not responding.

According to local news outlets, the American hiker began his planned four-hour hike around 7 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

Popi Despotidi, the deputy mayor, told CNN on Thursday that Calibet had been coming to Amorgos “almost every year” for about a decade.

A tourist from the Netherlands also disappeared

On the island of Samos, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist went missing on Sunday. A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway.

On Wednesday, the Greek rescue team from Samos reported in a Facebook post that the man had gone hiking near the town of Marathokampos. Local residents are helping in the search.

Konstancia Dimoglidou, spokeswoman for Greece's police, told CNN that “police, fire brigade and volunteers are involved in the search for both men, including by air.” – Unfortunately, we have no news about any of them yet – she added.

Greece is currently struggling with a huge heatwave. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued high temperature warnings.

Famous doctor found dead on a Greek island

Information about the missing men appeared just a few days after the end of the search operation for a tourist on another Greek island – Symi. He was him Michael Mosley, a popular British TV presenter and doctor, creator of the 5:2 diet. On Sunday, the body of a 67-year-old was found near one of the local beaches.

A spokeswoman for the Simi police added that investigators currently consider the cause of the 67-year-old's death to be “natural causes.” However, to confirm the above, it is necessary to carry out toxicological and histological tests.
