If the immunity is lifted, the prosecutor’s office intends to present a number of charges against Confederation MP Grzegorz Braun, the Ministry of Justice announced on Thursday. This includes, among other things, the violation of domestic peace and the insult committed in the Sejm.
The press office of the Ministry of Justice announced that the prosecutor’s office, if the immunity is lifted, intends to charge Grzegorz Braun with crimes relating to, among others: “violating the bodily inviolability of Łukasz Szumowski in connection with the performance of his official duties, as well as using physical violence in order to forcing him to behave in a certain way; slandering Łukasz Szumowski via mass media that he was under the influence of alcohol, which could have humiliated him in public opinion; damaging the Christmas tree, damaging the sound equipment, violating home peace by not leaving the German Historical Institute, insulting groups of people on the premises of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland and insulting an object of religious worship.
“Pursuant to the Act, the request to waive immunity is sent to the Speaker of the Sejm by the Minister of Justice and the Prosecutor General,” the Ministry of Justice added. It was submitted to the Sejm on Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, the Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia reported that the motion to waive Braun’s immunity “is being processed”. – Today I also signed documents on this matter, I have already sent them to the immunity committee (Committee on Rules, Deputies’ Affairs and Immunities), so we will probably vote on it soon – said the marshal.
Scandal in the Sejm
The proceedings regarding MP Braun became famous when, on December 12 last year, he used a powder fire extinguisher to He extinguished the Hanukkah candles lit during the ceremony in the Sejm. Then he appeared at the Sejm podium while the deputy speaker was chairing the meeting Krzysztof Bosak. The meeting was taken over by Marshal Hołownia, who excluded Braun from the meeting and announced that he would submit an application against him to the prosecutor’s office, among others. for disturbing a religious ceremony.
Hołownia also announced that the Presidium of the Sejm punished Braun with deprivation of half of his salary for three months and the entire allowance for six months.
Interview with the national prosecutor
After the incident, the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General Adam Bodnar he said that he talked about this case with the national prosecutor, Dariusz Barski. Bodnar then informed that he had received a “quite comprehensive” document regarding the proceedings against Grzegorz Braun. – There were a lot of these cases. Some of them were even known to the public, but somehow fell into oblivion, Bondar said.
He recalled that these were matters concerning, among others, former health ministers Łukasz Szumowski and Adam Niedzielski, or the matter of statements about the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. – I have the impression from reading what was happening that there was probably a lack of determination and consistency when it comes to identifying all these cases and prosecuting Grzegorz Braun – said the head of the Ministry of Justice.
Bodnar added that two previous cases were particularly crucial. – One is the famous destruction of a symbolic Christmas tree erected by the Association of Polish Judges, and the other is an attack during a lecture by a history professor from Germany.
