It is the fourth anniversary of Grzegorz Miecugow’s death. The journalist, co-creator of “Fakty” TVN, TVN24 and a long-time host of “Contact Glass” died on August 26, 2017 at the age of 61.
– Good evening, although it is a sad evening for us, because it is difficult to say goodbye to someone you talked to in the corridor a moment ago. I can’t believe I’ll say it, but I have to say it, and I’d better be able to do it, otherwise he wouldn’t like it. Grzegorz Miecugow is dead – said Anita Werner, starting the main edition of “Fakty” on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Today marks the fourth anniversary of the journalist’s death.
He started on Polish Radio
Grzegorz Miecugow, although he did not know for years who he wanted to become when he grew up, was sure of one thing: he does not want to be a journalist. However, he appeared in the media in 1980, somewhat by accident. And it stayed that way for the next 37 years, with a few breaks.
In 1980 he started working for the Polish Radio, and then for the Warsaw Radio and Television Center. In 1987 he joined the Three. He became the head of the editorial office of “Welcome to Trójki”, which he redefined to a large extent. Three years later, he was the station’s program director. He was fired after he objected to the president of Polish Radio over the salary of his deputies. The last program in Trójka was in February 2001, when he was already an employee of TVN24.
He became permanently associated with television in 1992. A year later, he made one of the most famous information materials – about voting for two hands both in the camp, which was in power at that time, and among the deputies of the Social Democrats and peasants. Together with Tomasz Lis and Jolanta Pieńkowska, they created their own information program, which for years attracted an audience of millions.
Miecugow about TVN24: we were constructed with the thought that every now and then the world goes crazy and these variations need to be shown live
In February 1997 he found his way to the new television – TVN – co-created by Mariusz Walter. Two years later he left TVN. For two years he cooperated with the Marshal of the Sejm, Maciej Płażyński.
In the fall of 2000, Maciej Sojka called him, to whom Walter offered the position of president of TVN24. Sojka offered Miecugow to return to TVN, this time he was to become the deputy of Adam Pieczyński, who was entrusted with the head of the first Polish news channel.
– We were constructed with the idea that from time to time the world rears up, goes crazy and you have to show these variations live – he explained 15 years later. He hit the spot because although TVN24 was launched on August 9, 2001, most Poles were convinced that the channel was launched on September 11, the day of the attacks on New York and Washington.
– The most important value of TVN24 is such a real, real impact on reality, on the world. Changing this world. For the better, I believe someone else may think not. But this change – that is, the feeling that you have been and are in something that makes the world better is this value – Miecugow emphasized in one of the conversations.
“Contact glass” and “Another point of view”
In 2004, Adam Pieczyński came up with the idea of making “Contact Glass”. Miecugov himself said that it was “the first program that reversed relations: we broadcast, you receive”. Contact glass, largely thanks to the work that Grzegorz Miecugow put into its creation, still attracts thousands of viewers in front of TV sets thanks to its formula.
One of the most important projects in Miecugów’s professional life was the program “Another point of view” on TVN24. Before the nearly 40-minute program became a regular part of the schedule, its author recorded several interviews with outstanding and well-known: Stanisław Lem, Krystyna Janda or Andrzej Mleczka. It was in 2003. Until 2007, the series consisted of over 150 meetings.
In 2010, Miecugow definitely abandoned talks with politicians. “Another Point of View” started on Sunday at 23:30. The program attracted an impressive audience: over 150,000 people. Until his death, Grzegorz Miecugow had recorded over 400 such interviews.
He starred in a movie twice
He was an icon of Polish media. He revolutionized Trójka, gave a new spirit to Wiadomości, co-created modern commercial media, while emphasizing their quality and content. In his career, he also had many interesting, surprising “artistic” episodes.
In the filmpolski.pl internet database you can find information that he has played in the film twice. For the first time as a presenter of “Wiadomości” in “Pułapka” by Adek Drabiński in 1997, and ten years later in “Rysio” by Stanisław Tym. This time in the role of a policeman.
He liked the stage and contact with the audience, at the beginning of his career he worked in the theater, then he wrote radio plays, the last – for children – he wrote for Polish Radio a few years ago.
“I will not make a tragedy out of it. I will fight”
Grzegorz Miecugow has been fighting cancer since 2011. – Man knows that he is mortal, that everyone’s life is numbered. It’s just that if you suddenly tell a man that it is numbered in specific numbers, it is a problem – he admitted in 2011. However, he emphasized: – I will not make a tragedy out of it. I will fight.
He performed for the last time in front of the audience on August 9, 2017 in “Glass Contact”. He passed away 17 days later.
