Canadian singer The Weeknd has been entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular artist in the world. The musician set two new records after being the first in the history of Spotify to break the barrier of 100 million monthly listeners.

On March 20, Canadian singer and music producer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, was entered into the Guinness Book of Records. According to the world records organization, the star was there because of two of his achievements on Spotify: the highest monthly number of listeners ever recorded and being the first artist in history to break the barrier of 100 million listeners in a month.

“Official: On February 27, The Weeknd became the first artist in Spotify history to reach 100 million monthly listeners,” Spotify said in late February. As of March 21, the number of people (accounts) who listened to The Weeknd’s songs during the month was already over 111.6 million. Second in the list, Miley Cyrus, 33, was ahead of over 30 million listeners. The Weeknd boasted about his achievement and setting two Guinness records on Monday on social media.

The CBS News portal notes that the Canadian’s record result was driven in large part by the February premiere of the remix of “Die For You”, which featured Ariana Grande. The recording from the studio, which the American singer shared on TikTok, quickly went viral on this platform, and the song itself became number one on the Spotify charts.

Guinness World Record The Weeknd

CBS News emphasizes that this is not the first time that The Weeknd has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records. In 2016, the singer has already received two diplomas awarded on the occasion of the entry on this prestigious list: for the most played album on Spotify and for the most consecutive weeks spent in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 list among male solo artists.

The 33-year-old also has another impressive record related to Spotify, although it is not listed in the Guinness Book of Records. His 2020 “Blinding Lights” is the most streamed track on the platform with close to 3.5 billion views. The lead in this category is also the song “Starboy” from the album of the same title released in 2016.
