DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Suspected members of a separatist group killed 11 individuals and injured a number of others in a nighttime assault on a police station in southeastern Iran, state TV mentioned Friday.
The deputy governor of Sistan and Baluchistan province, Ali Reza Marhemati, mentioned senior cops and troopers had been killed and injured within the 2 a.m. assault in Rask city, about 1,400 kilometers (875 miles) southwest of Tehran.
He mentioned police killed a number of of the attackers in a shootout.
State TV blamed the assault on Jaish al-Adl, a separatist group. In 2019, Jaish al-Adl claimed duty for a suicide bombing on a bus that killed 27 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard pressure.
In latest months, militants and small separatist teams within the predominantly Sunni area have attacked police stations as a part of a low-level insurgency towards the federal government.
Sistan and Baluchestan province is without doubt one of the least developed areas of Iran. It was the positioning of heavy crackdowns on rallies following nationwide protests over the demise in police custody of a 22-year-old lady, Mahsa Amini, in Tehran who had been detained for allegedly improperly carrying an Islamic veil.
