At least two people died in two earthquakes in the southwest of Haiti on Monday. The quakes destroyed over 35 homes.

The first quake occurred around 7 a.m. (1 p.m. Polish time). It had a magnitude of 5.3. Almost an hour later there was a second, not much weaker – 5.1. Both quakes occurred west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Haitian authorities said two people were injured. Yves Bosse, an official in the Nippes department where the quakes took place, told the Associated Press that one of the fatalities had died when a sand quake had subsided as a result of the quakes. The neighborhood was paralyzed – businesses and schools were closed for the day. “People are afraid to go back to their homes,” Bosse confessed.
