The beginning of June brought very difficult weather to the people of Haiti. Since Thursday, the country has been hit by heavy downpours, which contributed to extensive flooding. At least 15 people died. Thousands of residents lost their homes and all their belongings. It’s still raining, so it’s not possible to estimate the damage yet.

At least 15 people are dead and eight more are missing after heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in Haiti over the weekend. Hundreds of homes across the country were flooded, local authorities said.

Still raining

Heavy rains have wracked the country since Thursday and are likely to continue into this week.

“We were prepared for circumstances where it rains for three to five days. […] The situation will not improve in the coming hours as there are dense thunderstorm cells over the western and southeastern departments, which explains why it continues to rain, said Marcelin Esterlin, director general of the national meteorological service.

Still estimating starts

Almost 13.4 thousand people had to be evacuated from their homes, and the belongings of 7.4 thousand were displaced. families were destroyed by the element. The rains also devastated crops in the famine-stricken central regions of Haiti. The scale of the disaster is still being estimated.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was working with local and international organizations to minimize the size of the disaster.
