“My heart broke into a thousand pieces. I have never experienced such pain,” the American politician wrote on social media on Friday, confirming the death of his daughter, Natalie Lloyd.

Along with Baker's daughter, her husband, Davy Lloyd, was also killed, as was a third lay missionary serving in Lison, a northern suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

A gang attack on a group of missionaries

The circumstances of the tragic event, which took place in an area plagued by high activity of criminal groups, are under investigation.

According to the EFE agency, American missionaries were attacked by a gang that came to the orphanage where the Americans helped in order to plunder it.

ABC News, in turn, reports that the Americans were attacked on one of the roads by a gang traveling in three cars.

Violence has increased dramatically in recent years in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas. Armed gangs have taken control of much of the country. Several of them blocked the international airport in Port-au-Prince for three months. Thanks to the intervention of Haitian security forces, the airport was restored on Monday.
