It is created as a result of refraction, reflection or diffraction of light in ice crystals that build feathery high-level clouds – cirrus or cirrostratus. Halos can take various forms, from a single arc to spots of light or colored rings. Sometimes it is accompanied by other phenomena, such as side suns.
According to superstitions, the appearance of a halo in the sky means that the weather will deteriorate in the near future. In reality, the situation is a bit more complicated. Halos do not give a clear indication of a change in weather because cirrus clouds are not rain clouds. However, there is a grain of truth in the superstition – the presence of these clouds also informs about the occurrence of air currents in the troposphere, which are often associated with the approaching warm front.
