The goal of Israel and its retaliatory actions is to eliminate Hamas as much as possible – said Dr. Agnieszka Bryc from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in ToruĊ„ in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24. Together with Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, former ambassador to Latvia and Armenia, she commented on the consequences of the Palestinian Hamas attack on Israel and the Israeli military response. – The United States must support Israel, (but) it will probably have a hampering effect on hostilities, the former diplomat noted.

On October 7, the terrorist ruling the Gaza Strip Hamas attacked Israel, killing over 1,300 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping at least 120 others. Nearly two thousand people have been killed in attacks by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip since then. IN Saturday, Israel called on Palestinians to evacuate the northern part of the Gaza Strip, warning that it would “attack with great force.”

This conflict was commented on in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 by Dr. Agnieszka Bryc from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in ToruĊ„ and Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, former ambassador to Latvia and Armenia, president of the Euro-Atlantic Association.

Agnieszka Bryc said that the goal of Israel and its retaliatory actions is to “eliminate Hamas as much as possible.” She said that it is difficult to judge whether Israel will strive to take full control over the Gaza Strip, because it is not known whether if it decides to conduct a land operation, it will also result in the occupation of this area.

Jerzy Marek Nowakowski added that the question remains whether Israel will also decide to attack the underground tunnels in which – as he said – Hamas fighters store their weapons. – (There – ed.) there are communication routes that probably allow them to penetrate to the other side of the border, even though the Israelis dug their border wall a few meters underground. And there are probably communication routes that also lead to Egypt, he added.

Warnings for Palestinians

Agnieszka Bryc also commented on Israel’s call to evacuate Palestinians from the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

– There are no ideal states in a state of war. So what Israel is doing can be said to be optimal in the situation that exists. That is, what they can do is give the civilian population time to leave a given part of the Gaza Strip, she pointed out. She added that “in these actual conditions, on the ground, Israel is acting in a way that is optimal for itself and the civilian population.”

– And those who remain in their homes, Israelis will have the opportunity, or in fact the right, to treat them not as civilians, because they have been warned, but as supporters of terrorist organizations – said an expert from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in ToruĊ„.

Nowakowski: The USA will probably have an inhibitory effect on military operations

Jerzy Marek Nowakowski drew attention to the role of the United States in this conflict. – The United States has no choice. The United States must support Israel, (but – ed.) it will probably have a hampering effect on hostilities, which in turn may have a double effect. Because you can actually prolong this humanitarian disaster, he said.

When asked what this slowing down would mean, he replied: – It means (it will be said – editor): “don’t kill too many civilians”, to put it terribly brutally.

Today there is a “flag effect”, but “all the disputes that existed before the war will return”

Agnieszka Bryc also pointed out how the war with Hamas will affect the personal situation of Prime Minister Netanyahu. She assessed that the “flag effect” is still at work, i.e. society uniting around the prime minister in the face of war. – And today, in these hours, in the coming days, he is still taking advantage of the situation that he is responsible for the operation – she said.

However, she added that after the situation is initially under control, “all the disputes that existed before the war will return” in Israel.
