Hanna Machińska dismissed from the position of deputy Commissioner for Human Rights. Other experts resign

All members of the Commission of Experts on the observance of civil rights in the activities of secret services at the Commissioner for Human Rights have resigned today, said one of the experts of the commission, Wojciech Klicki. These are the next experts who resign after the dismissal of Hanna Machińska from the position of deputy Commissioner for Human Rights.

Ombudsman Marcin Wiącek slowed down this week Dr. Hanna Machinska the duties of his deputy. She will be replaced by Wojciech Brzozowski, PhD, head of the Department of Religious Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw.

The Commissioner’s decision was a surprise, among others, to the team of experts operating at the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture. Some members of this body decided to submit their resignations in connection with the dismissal of the deputy. After Before, a protest was organized in front of the Commissioner’s office.

Other experts resign

On Friday, a lawyer from the Panoptykon Foundation, Wojciech Klicki, announced that all its members had resigned from work in the Commission of Experts for the observance of civil rights in the activities of secret services operating at the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.

Under the December 9 document that informs Marcin Wiącek on the decision of the members, Klicki signed on behalf of the other members: Jacek Cichocki, Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, Tomasz Borkowski, Barbara Grabowska-Moroz, Piotr Gąciarek, Agnieszka Grzelak, Piotr Kładoczny, Dariusz Korneluk, Radosław Kujawa, Piotr Niemczyk, Mikołaj Pietrzak and Adam Rapacki.

The first meeting of the Committee of Experts on the observance of civil rights in the activities of secret services was held on October 28, 2019. As described by the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, its purpose is “to develop standards for respecting civil rights in the activities of services authorized to undertake operational and reconnaissance activities (secret and police services)”.
