Colombian President Gustavo Petro canceled his participation in the peace summit in Switzerland, where the Ukraine issue is being discussed. As he said, his “conclusions are predetermined.”

Leader Colombia declared that the peak of Switzerland “It is not a forum for a free discussion about the paths to peace between Russia and Ukraine, and its conclusions are predetermined,” the El Tiempo daily reported. – I decided to suspend my visit to the conference in Switzerland because Latin America does not want any more war, but wants to build peace as quickly as possible – Petro said on Saturday, adding that he would return to Colombia that day.

According to the original plan, Petro was to hold a bilateral meeting with the president in Switzerland, among other things Ukraine – reported the Infobae portal.

Colombia's president long refused to condemn Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, but in June 2023 – after a Russian missile attack on a civilian target in Kramatorsk, where three Colombians were injured – he ordered a formal protest to be submitted to Moscow.

Summit in Switzerland

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky together with Swiss President Viola Amherd, in a short statement to the media opening the peace summit in Buergenstock, he announced that he believed that the politicians gathered there would be “witnesses of history in the making.”

Zelensky considered the upcoming conference to be a success because, as he said, “we managed to restore to the world the idea that joint efforts can stop war and establish a just peace.”

– Today is the day of our common success. We really managed to give diplomacy a chance, he added.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine never wanted a war. – This is a criminal and absolutely unprovoked aggression by Russia, and the only one who wanted it was Putin – he emphasized. – But in any case, peace is stronger – he added.

That is why, as the Ukrainian leader said, the Peace Formula was born. – The formula of unity of the world majority in the name of peace, in the name of the full effectiveness of the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter, international law, and therefore global security. This is something that is close to every nation in the world, he said. – I am grateful to each and everyone who helped and will help to develop a peace formula – concluded the President of Ukraine.

On Friday, Zelensky said that one hundred countries and international organizations, united by a “common goal of lasting and just peace,” will take part in the conference in Switzerland.

After the offensive of Ukrainian forces

The peace summit was convened on the initiative of Ukraine and Switzerland. The idea of organizing a conference – as recalled by the Ukrainian section of the BBC – arose at the end of 2022, after Ukrainian forces liberated the occupied part of the Kharkiv Oblast and Kherson.

“At that time, it seemed that the idea of gathering representatives from all over the world in one place, gaining their support for the 'Ukrainian peace formula,' and then presenting to Moscow a plan to implement it on behalf of everyone and end the war seemed quite realistic. However, time has changed this correction. Russia managed to equalize the situation on the front and even launch a new offensive against Ukrainian positions,” the BBC reported.

“Various factors have meant that the long-awaited peace summit will take place in a completely different geopolitical context than initially anticipated by its initiators. And it is unlikely that it will lead to the results they expected at the beginning of the process,” the BBC added.
