TOPR rescuers saved a wounded tourist on Thursday from the monk threshold. Due to adverse weather conditions, the rescue operation lasted many hours. In the higher parts of the mountains, the second degree of avalanche threat applies, and even lower trails may be dangerously slippery.
According to the Tatra Volunteer Ambulance Service, information about the incident received rescuers on Thursday after 1pm. While climbing on a monk threshold, a tourist fell off the rock wall.
“As a result of about a 40 -meter flight, the unlucky mountaineer found a dozen or so meters under the position of a friend who protects him, experiencing head and chest injuries,” said rescuers.
22 rescuers, eight hours
22 rescuers took part in the action, and the whole lasted about eight hours. As the TOPR Lifeguard Mieczysław Ziach explained in an interview with TVN24, it was impossible to use the helicopter due to adverse weather conditions.
– The trip was carried out by classical methods, i.e. access to Morskie Oko, reaching the climber and the wall downhill – he explained.
Rescuers said that the man was transported to the shelter on the Morskie Oko and further to Palenica Białczańska. There he was handed over to an ambulance team.
Difficult tourist conditions
From Friday in Tatras From a height of 1700 meters above sea level, the second degree of avalanche threat applies. This means that the snow cover is generally well related to the ground, but on steep slopes it is possible to liberate an avalanche, especially with high additional load. TOPR rescuers added that, along with forecast further snowfall, avalanche threat may increase, but in the following days an improvement in the situation is expected.
The Tatra National Park warned against icy. Especially slippery is on popular trails, such as the road to Morskie Oko, especially on the so -called abbreviations above the Wanta forester's lodge. In the lower parts of the mountains, snow melts, creating wet break, and low suspended clouds significantly reduce visibility.
Rescuers reminded that moving in the upper parts of the Tatra Mountains requires experience in winter mountain tourism and appropriate equipment: Raków, Czekka, helmet and avalanche ABC – detector, probe, shoulder blades. In the lower areas, it is recommended to take crawls and poles. Tourists planning trips to the Tatra Mountains should follow avalanche messages and tourist conditions, and if in doubt, they give up entering the more difficult trails.
