On Saturday, a court in Kiev ordered Ihor Kolomoisky to be placed in detention for two months. The oligarch is suspected of legalizing illegally obtained property. In his evening speech, Volodymyr Zelensky said that there would be no leniency towards those “who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and all rules.”

A court in Kiev on Saturday ordered the businessman to be placed in detention for two months (until October 30) in Dnipro, the businessman’s hometown, with the possibility of paying bail in the amount of over 509 million hryvnias (over USD 13 million).

The court session was held behind closed doors at the request of Kolomoisky’s lawyer, but the verdict was announced publicly.

The lawyers have already announced that they will appeal. They have five days to appeal.

SBU: transferred over half a billion hryvnia abroad

Security Service Ukraine (SBU) reported on Saturday that Kolomoisky was notified of the suspicion of committing a crime involving fraud and legalization of property obtained as a result of crime. The SBU believes that Kolomoyskyi transferred over half a billion hryvnias (equivalent to approximately USD 14 million) abroad in 2013-20, using banks under his supervision.

Kolomoisky told journalists before the court’s decision was announced that he had only had time to briefly read the accusations and that he completely rejected them.

He supported Zelensky before the elections

Businessman, one of the richest citizens of Ukraine, before elections presidential elections in 2019, he supported Volodymyr Zelensky in his political ambitions.

Ihor Kolomoisky is one of the richest Ukrainians. It has assets in the energy, transport and media industries. In the past, the oligarch also owned the largest bank in Ukraine, Privatbank, which was nationalized in 2016 due to debts. As Reuters notes, the current actions against Kolomoisky come at a time when Kiev is trying to signal progress in the fight against corruption during the ongoing war. Kolomoisky is perceived as belonging to a group of oligarchs who accumulated great wealth after the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and had significant political and economic influence in the country.

The influence of the oligarchs decreased with the war, which destroyed profitable industrial plants in the east and south of the country and the media that controlled them.

The suspicions reported by the SBU on Saturday are the next actions of the justice system regarding Kolomoisky in almost a year. In February, his house in Dnieper was searched. In November 2022, the Ukrainian state took control of the shares of five strategic enterprises, including companies controlled by Kolomoisky.

Kyiv is trying to bring back corrupt representatives of the elites

Ukrainian Justice Minister Denys Maluska said on Saturday that Kiev is working to bring back to the country corrupt representatives of elites who fled to European countries, but for now, European countries are refusing to extradite the suspects due to the ongoing war.

The minister, who spoke on state television, explained that most of – as he put it – “leading criminals” are in European countries. The courts of these countries are “very cautious about extradition” because of the ongoing war. – Corrupt representatives of the elite also have “good lawyers (…) So in most cases, unfortunately, our foreign partners refuse extradition for now,” he admitted. He expressed hope that “this is a temporary phenomenon.” He assured that Ukraine would first try to reach those “who stole the most.” The minister did not mention any names.

Fighting corruption is a condition for joining the European Union

The law should work – that’s how it is and that’s how it will be, Zelensky said in an evening video speech. He assured that Ukraine in the future would be a country “with different rules” and that there would certainly be no leniency towards those “who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and all rules.”
