This is another installment in the ambassador dispute. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed that Mateusz Morawiecki pressured the Italian prime minister to say “no” to Ryszard Schnepf's candidacy for ambassador, but he achieved nothing. There are voices in the coalition about high treason.

Minister Sikorski confirmed what had been unofficially said for several days. – I checked this rumor and, unfortunately, it has been confirmed – he said in “Kropka nad i”. He added that it was outrageous.

This is about the case described by “Gazeta Wyborcza”. Mateusz Morawiecki allegedly pressured the Prime Minister of Italy to refuse to accept the new Polish ambassador.

The former president speaks of treason. – This is a denunciation of the Polish state. This is disloyalty to the Polish state. I will say more: this bears the hallmarks of high treason – commented Bronisław Komorowski.

“Mr. Morawiecki presented himself as a primitive snitch”

The new government is sending an experienced diplomat, Ryszard Schnepf, to Rome. During the previous government, Schnepf was a vocal critic of the diplomacy conducted by Law and Justice. Now PiS is doing a lot to prevent him from becoming ambassador.

– Mr. Morawiecki presented himself as a primitive snitch who thinks that his words still mean something on the international stage – assessed former Prime Minister Leszek Miller.

Law and Justice party denials are heard. “I don't know anything about it,” said Jarosław Kaczyński. “Such actions simply did not take place,” declared Piotr Müller, former spokesman for Mateusz Morawiecki's government and a Law and Justice politician who won a seat in the European Parliament.

The fact is that Morawiecki recently spoke with Meloni. Law and Justice is in the same faction with her in the European Parliament, but the party swears that there was no conversation about the ambassador. “I am convinced that this is, as they say in this modern Polish today, a fake,” said Jarosław Kaczyński.

Similar procedures were to be used in Kiev and Budapest.

However, “Gazeta Wyborcza” claims that it has confirmed these revelations not only in sources in Poland, but also in Italy. Moreover, similar procedures were allegedly used in Kiev and Budapest.

– This is such an un-state, very unpatriotic action – assessed the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, former Polish ambassador to Russia, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz from Poland 2050.

Similar stories in diplomacy are almost unheard of, and refusing to receive an ambassador is usually a huge rift in bilateral relations.

– Morawiecki has already proven more than once that he is acting to the detriment of Poland's interests – noted Borys Budka from the Civic Platform, who won a mandate to the European Parliament.

– This is not just sabotage, but PiS, if today's coalition and the then opposition were doing it, would call it diplomatic treason – emphasized Robert Biedroń, MEP of the New Left, who won a mandate to the European Parliament. – This is diplomatic treason, this is acting to the detriment of the state, to the detriment of the raison d'état – he added.

The open conflict between the president and the government continues

The conflict over ambassadors has been going on for weeks, and although the government was supposed to reach an agreement with the president behind the scenes, Andrzej Duda suddenly changed his mind. He threatened that he would not accept the candidates put forward by the government, although according to the constitution it is the Council of Ministers that conducts the country's foreign policy. Radosław Sikorski wants to replace almost 50 ambassadors, but it is the president who must ultimately appoint them.

– I appeal to simply sit down and talk about these matters calmly – says Piotr Müller. – I would like the Presidential Palace to be open to these nominations, because as a government we have the right to do so – points out Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

In the Italian case, the alleged behind-the-scenes efforts of the former prime minister did not yield any results; Meloni allegedly told him that she would not interfere. – Thanks to this, Mr. Ambassador Schnepf received Italy's consent to serve three times faster than usual – sums up Radosław Sikorski.

It is not yet known whether Ryszard Schnepf will receive the president's nomination. If not, he and other diplomats sent to missions will remain in the lower rank of charge d'affairs, which will damage the image of our country.
